just google your start-up items in msconfig and find out which ones don't have to run at startup.

'things i've done before

See, if you had mentioned that in the 1st place you may have gotten better answers. It's all in the way you ask ;-)

It sounds like your friend may have done some overclocking. Ask him. For that you will need to do a bit of reading/studying.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

you could cut down the display os and display choices at startup, standard is 30 secs, control panel/system/advanced system settings/startup and recovery lower the time to display 5 and 10 secs should be enough, that will save you almost a minute.
you can also set the machine to go into hibernation rather shut down, this will increase apparent startup speed significantly.
disable auto updates in the Msconfig, startup panel.disable indexing, search and anything else That is unwanted or unneeded that use's resources during startup..disable virus scans and system scans at startup, thats about as fast as your gonna get a startup running, but im sure some people may be able to offer even more little tweaks..

i hate computers!
but cant help myself....

There is a way to load things after you get to desktop . It only makes it look like it is faster.

You can speed up the system by other means too. MS and plenty of web pages tell how. http://www.microsoft.com/atwork/mai...
