Specs: Windows Vista
I have tried to download Google chrome to my wife's lenovo thinkpad but it It comes up with the same message after three attempts, basically ' this is not possible '. I recently downloaded it on to my grand-daughters old desktop PC that also runs on Windows 7, and that went okay.

The latest Version of Google Chrome does not support Windows XP or Windows Vista anymore.
That might be the problem, as your Specs shows Windows Vista.

✔ Best Answer
Try Disk Clean Up.
Then run Malwarebytes.
Then run ADWCleaner.
Then restart the computer.
Try downloading the file to the desktop. Then open the file and install.
If it does not work, try Firefox both to see if it can be installed and to try it in case you need something else (other than IE) and Chrome still does not work.

Windows Vista runs my desktop PC. I was referring to my wife's laptop.

In between your answer and me getting on to the laptop she had downloaded the Opera browser, but doesn't know when or how she did it.

And you thought I was bad.

Anyway, your way worked, we got Google Chrome and the Mailware quarantined 184 pieces of spyware on there, so god knows what she looks at.

Now she says she doesn't like it (ffs)

I asked her what was wrong with it and she said 'I can't see MSN news about show business.'

I said 'Just Google the name you want to know about.'

And the puzzled look and answer was 'What?'

33 years we've been together,

The Krays only got 30.

It is, but, imho, that has to be the worlds worst browser.

I use Google Chrome and Firefox on my PC, I gave up on IE years ago.

What he is saying is that you can set up Firefox so that MSN.com is her home page and that would make her happy with the better browser. Much happier in the long run.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Sorry for delay replying.

She has now got a message that keeps coming back while she was using IE.

winzip files of some sort (can't remember, may be drivers) '14 important updates' and they offer one to download free, and pay for the other 13.

You do not pay for Microsoft Updates. You do not pay for driver updates. Those are bogus.
Clear out Internet Explorer History.
Run Disk Clean Up
Run Malwarebytes.
Run ADWCleaner
Check Browser Add Ons and disable anything not really important.
Manually run Windows Update and install all important Updates for Windows and Microsoft Office.
Go to laptop manufacture's web site and using the model number download and install any needed drivers (latest versions). Do not get drivers from anywhere else as they are not specifically tested for her laptop and certified.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
