lenovo E520 , total software corruption

Specs: window 7 professional

My Lenovo E520 was working fine up to yesterday. It was updating when I shut it down. Upon Start up today, window 7 professional operating system failed to configure updates. After a few attempts, it had reverted changes, however, after logging in, all softwares had become malfunctions. A few of them including the antivirus softwares had disappeared from menu, control panel suggesting it had been uninstalled.

When I tried to open any of the softwares, which had all turned into blank icons, the message'the file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action, please install a program or, if one is already installed, create an association in the default programs control panel ' occurs inclusive of internet explorer. this had prevented me from able to download any softwares to help the situation, and any softwares from discs are again not recognized by displaying the same message. when i tried to open files from these pre-exisiting softwares, a message ' the program can't start because SHELL32.dll is missing from your computer. Try re installing the program to fix this problem.

I have tried to reset the computer to factory default settings, but without cd available, this had been very difficult and I think I might have more than just one problem at the same time. Given I am not an expert on computers, I thought I must have missed something. I would be most grateful for your help.

Many thanks

There is a Lenovo application supplied and pre-installed which allows you to make a set of Recovery Discs when Windows is working okay (ie as soon as possible after buying your laptop).

You need to boot your laptop from disc #1 of this set if you want to restore your hard drive to factory defaults.

Here's the cause of all your problems --> "It was updating when I shut it down".
