Assuming the laptop is not brand new, you probably have a build up of dust in your laptop's cooling paths and heat sink(s). You can confirm this by installing HWMonitor and confirming the system's temperatures at idle and during use. You need to blow out the dust with a can of compressed air that you can purchase at a computer store or office supply store. Just blow the air into all of the vents and carefully into the easier opening access panels they supply. If this does not help, you MAY have either too much dust build up and may have to open the system or have it cleaned out professionally, or (less likely), another obstruction hitting the fan's blades.
Post back results for more advice.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Hi WebWolf,

You have not mentioned the make and model of the system. For Dell Laptops, refer to the link mentioned below:

Thanks & Regards

If the sound goes away when muted it is not likely to be a mechanical fault or overheating. Could be the sound card or module is faulty. As said in #3, the make and model of the system might help us.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
