Laptop sometimes shuts down instead of sleeping on lid close

Specs: Windows 7
Most of the time when I close the lid on my computer it goes to sleep. Every once in a while it shuts down instead. When I open it again it has to boot up. It's frustrating to lose all the windows I had open.

It happens regardless of how much power is in the battery. In fact it often happens with a completely full battery. It also doesn't have anything to do with how long it's asleep. I can usually leave it asleep overnight with no problem, but sometimes I find it has shut down when I close it and then open it two minutes later.

In "Power Options" The computer is set to sleep when the lid closes.

It is frustrating because it is just intermittent enough to make it very difficult to remember exactly what I was doing each time in order to recognize patterns.

Are there any power options in BIOS, if so check them, though if this is an intermitent thing then i guess those options wouldnt help, still work having a look.

try a check disk

right click on your C:\ drive >> Properties >> Tools >> Check now

it will ask you if you want to start a check on your next reboot, click yes.

lastly, when you leave your laptop where do you put it? i ask because, if you leave it on say something like a blanket, this will cover up the air vents on the laptop and could possibly be overheating it, therefore to protect itself the laptop shuts down. only a theory but could be possible.

Try switching the lid action to hibernation. It's a more secure state anyway, uses less power, and may get you past the bugs.
