keyboard/mouse not working after virus remove

Specs: Windows 7 enterprise, 2.8 dual/3gb
Hello everybody,
I am fixing a buddys pc which had several viruses/spyware. After scanning with Avast and quarantining viruses, my mouse and keyboard no longer work at the windows login screen. They are PS2, but I have also tried USB with no luck. I know the keyboard still works before login screen, as I can access BIOS or boot from cd.

Safe mode is a no-go as well. I booted from the WIN7 cd to get to the command prompt to run the SFC utility, but it says something like a repair is in progress and will not allow me to run SFC. I have also tried system restore, but that fails.

Any Ideas? I've been stuck on this for a few hours and am getting frustrated. I want to know if anybody has any tips before I nuke it and start over. Help is greatly appreciated.
Regards,
~winipcfg

Try a Windows 7 Repair disk (this can be made from any Windows 7 machine with the same type (32bit or 64bit regardless of version) and you will be offered a few options when you boot to this disk. You can do a Start Up Repair if it will not boot at all, you can do a System Restore that does not use the in system restore feature that may be corrupted because it has its own but can still access the existing restore points (be careful to make sure you go far enough back to avoid the corrupted restore points) This has helped me before when a system restore with the built in tools and other repair tools have not.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Fingers,
I do not have another machine with Win7 on it to make a repair disc. I do have a Win7 installation disc. I will try a repair from the installation disc and post back in a bit.

System restore from disc did not work. I ended up putting xp pro on the machine. Now the hunt for drivers begins.....
