Solved Is MS automatically downloading Windows 10, can I block it?

May 26, 2016 at 10:07:50
Specs: Windows 7 Home Premium to Linux
Preventing Windows 7 upgrading to Windows 10 (downloading and/or installing) against my wishes.

Toshiba Satellite C655D
Windows 7 Home Premium
Service Pack 1
3.00GB (2.60 usable)
64-bit OS
AMD E-240 Processor 1.50 GHz

What is the best way to stop this from happening? How can I check to make sure it isn't already downloaded although not necessarily installed?

"would it still be advantageous for me to download the GWX_control_panel.exe"

Yes it would. I provided the 2nd link in response #2 so you could see what the Control Panel looks like & what it does. Even if you don't have the GWX icon, it's likely that Win10 files have invaded your system. If they're there, the Control Panel will find them for you. It's very possible you have several GBs of Win10 files/folders on your system just waiting to be triggered.

Download GWX Control Panel (I recommend the standalone version). You can get it here:

My method is simple:
Set Windows Update to Manual (do not download or install)
Check Windows Updates weekly
Look at recommended updates and uncheck this one: KB3035583
(If you have this one installed already, uninstall it via Programs>Updates)
Install remaining updates that are recommended.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
