I generally skip the extended warranty on most things I purchase. If I purchase a TV, Frig, Dishwasher, etc and choose a name brand I trust as durable, the $100. per year (or more) will cost more than a new appliance by the time it begins to have problems. For most electronics this appears to hold true also, to spend a little bit more for a brand or better model appears to be a better use of my money and has proven that they rarely fail until I would have paid for the thing all over again in yearly warranty fees. Potentially laptops maybe a different matter since they are expensive and more difficult to repair than say a desktop computer is and maybe used under a variety of conditions. If the laptop is new or within it's first year and you can get a reasonable deal on a good warranty, it may pay to get a second year to protect against a bigger expense. That said, I purchased two laptops, one 5 years ago (Sony Vaio for daughter going to collage) which only now had a hard drive fail. I could replace the drive, but a 5 year old laptop is old and probably does not pay. The second 3 years ago (HP with upgraded graphics and extra RAM for second daughter for collage) and still going strong with just an upgrade this year from Vista to W7 and not problems. Between the two I have saved maybe $800.00 in yearly warranty fees. Your choice, I spent a couple hundred extra for premium models and won the roll of the dice, you might, you might not.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

I like to get 3yr extended warranty because I want someone else to fix the hardware if it breaks. Any component fails, wham, I have new and they have to do the work. No patience anymore for down time with a computer.

Answers are only as good as the information you provide.

Buy a laptop from Costco and you automatically get a second year for free. Costco carries better than bottom tier units so if you are looking for the very cheapest you won't find them there. That said, they are competitive on the units they carry.

BTW, I don't have any affiliation with Costco. Just a long time member.
