Internet set up

Specs: Windows 7, AMD 64
set up my internet without using a network on windows 7 ultimate. Ive recently set up my internet with a home network, but my mcafee is showing that I have intruders trying to access my computer, so all I want to know is if there is a way to set up the internet without having to set up a homegroup network. Also can anyone tell me why my cpu spiked after windows updates, it hovers at apprx. 26-30 an peaks suddenly on it's own without having any thing significant running!

If you have more than one computer you will need a router along with your modem. You don't need a network for the machines to access the internet. You only need a network if you need access to the other machines. Your McAfee is probably showing false readings on someone trying to access your computer. The attempts to access you are real, but not necessarily intruders. i would suggest you use a free antivirus like Avast or Microsoft Security Essentials. The cpu usage could be due to anything from application use to spyware. Run a spyware scan on the machine. Try this free app.
