Solved Internet Explorer starts automatically

February 15, 2014 at 14:10:44
Specs: Windows 7
My internet explorer starts automatically also. It's not listed under startup in msconfig nor is it in my startup folder under programs. Any ideas on why this would still be happening?

If this is still a company computer you may not want to make too many changes. If it's now yours or you're allowed to make changes:

Go to 'internet options' and try setting the home page to 'use blank'.

Check msconfig--startup again and see if any of the company software is running. If so try disabling it. It may be trying to connect to the internet and IE may be opening because of that.

It might be running from the registry but usually it still appears in msconfig (look for file iexplore.exe).

It's an unusual symptom. Best run MalwareBytes just to get a check on whether it is virus related - it often finds and fixes what AV's miss. Use green icon at top here:

Does it try to connect to a site when it opens?

#3 makes all the difference and should have been included in the original post. I now doubt it is virus related.

The company could have done about anything to it so it's not going to be easy to fix from afar. If you are OK in the registry then search for the website it goes to. It might unearth something. Similarly you could look for iexplore.exe in all of the Run areas.

Good thought that DAVE about looking for company software.

Also look in Control Panel > Programs and Features to see if a company program appears there (assuming it's now yours).
