It sounds suspicious. Run these to start with:

ADWCleaner:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/dow...
(blue Download button near top - not anything else on the page).
Download and "Save" the file somewhere. Go to the saved file then double click it to run the Scan. You then have options to remove whatever it shows under each heading in the table that appears below, although it is usually safe to run "Cleaning".

MalwareBytes:
http://filehippo.com/download_malwa...
(green Download button top right - not anything else on the page)
Run the program but before doing the scan go to "Settings > Detection and Protection" and put a checkmark in "Scan for rootkits".

If either or both find anything then please copy/paste the logs on here because even if the symptoms are cured you are likely to still have things lurking around that require further cleaning. If nothing is found let us know.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > Advanced tab. Hit the Reset button and see if that helps. You will lose add-ons but they come back with usage. Your favorites etc will not be touched.

I still think malware is a possibility.

Do a System Restore to a date before any of these problems began, in fact probably a week or so before you noticed anything (use 'show more restore points' as needed), just to be sure. This will correct any corrupted system files and registry entries and mostly nullify recently installed stuff like what may have caused the problem. After the restore, immediately rescan with the above cleaner and Malwarebytes and copy/paste the logs here for others to review to make sure you are clean from nasties.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Yeah, Fingers System Restore suggestion is a good thing to try for this sort of issue. It will keep all your own stuff and doesn't take very long. Just type System Restore in Search.

Use the drivers that are on the CD that came with the laptop.

Or download the drivers from Dell's site, use another computer for the download if needed, save them to a flash drive and then copy them over to the computer in question and install them from there.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

I'm going to assume that where you say "nothing happened" you mean it "didn't fix the problem", rather than there was no response from the computer. If that assumption is wrong please let us know.

"and there was no response"

Sorry to nag on, but I it is important to get things crystal clear. Are you saying that when you ran ADWCleaner and MalwareBytes (for instance) that you had no response at all, ie the programs didn't even run? If so then this is important because something was stopping them running which we need to investigate.

We cannot see what is happening so have to rely totally on what you say to us.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

You can't copy the drivers from another computer. You need to download them from Dell. See the link below. Also, run the malware scans as suggested above. Enter the service tag off the laptop for the correct drivers.

The numbers you need may be under the battery where they do not get rubbed off easily.
