how do i install windows 7 on a laptop with windows xp without deleting all of the files there are there?

There is no direct upgrade from xp to win7, just from vista. So you need to copy the data, etc to another location (cd/dvd or flash drive. external hard disk), then load Windows 7, as it will install fresh and you will lose all the data when it installs.

You can do a parallel installation (dual-boot) of Win7 along with WinXP on a separate partition, if you have one.

Or

If you have or can create a separate partition on the HDD, you can move all your files/folders on to the separate partition and then format WinXP partition during Win7 install.

Or

You can do as HopperRox has already advised.
