Solved Installing new hard drive and need os

Specs: windows 7
I am installing a new hard drive in my computer. Where can I get a new os? I had system mechanic on the old one and every few days it said there were registry problems. Now it has the virus that locks up your computer and says it is the FBI and they want money. I had panda cloud antivirus too.

Buy Windows either online (eg from Amazon) or from a software store, though you may have difficulty finding a store that still has Windows 7 because Microsoft asked for all unsold copies to be returned when Windows 8 retail was launched.

newegg.com still shows Windows 7 as being available, in fact, I purchased a copy for my next build so I will be ready.
If you system is from many manufacturers as a complete system, you may be able to purchase a recovery disk set for your exact system at a discount as long as you can prove ownership and read them the serial number from the system.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

I hope you're not installing the new HDD because of the virus (or viruses). Regardless, do yourself a favor, stop running garbage software like System Mechanic.

"Where can I get a new os?"

Linux is free & rarely gets infected, in fact, no anti-virus is required.

Linux Mint

I'm not a Linux fan whatsoever.
Donaldb , do yourself a favor and just google 'windows 7 license' and figure out where you want to buy it. Use Paypal and if you have any problems, it's easy to get a refund...good luck.

Re #9

You don't need anything like that - invalid registry entries don't cause any problems.
Avoid all unnecessary registry cleaners and magic "fix everything" programs. We often see their aftermath on these forums.

"CCleaner Slim" cleans out junk safely - most of the others do more harm than good.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

OEM version of Windows 7 Home Premium is on sale with the Promo Code shown here:
http://promotions.newegg.com/NEemai...
When you click on the link, it may not show the price, but you enter the code at check out, and it will be applied. This is a limited time sale so do not wait, but you would do even better (price) if you can get the recovery disk set from the manufacturer. Note that in order to purchase OEM versions of software, you may be required to purchase some computer component (even if it is a $2. plug or connector of some type).

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
