I'd install a virtual machine.

1/3 of highway deaths are caused by drunks. The rest are by people who can't drive any better than a drunk.

You may find it easier to install XP on a virtual PC within Windows 7.
Before you try to install, make sure you can get drivers for your hardware!!! Most new hardware does not have XP drivers written for it so this MUST be your first step. ONLY if you can get the drivers should you continue. Follow:
1- Download drivers and put them on a flash drive.
1a- Make a Windows 7 repair disk (so you can easily do a start up repair later).
2- Set BIOS to have your SATA drives appear as IDE drives to XP (if this is not possible then you will need to slipstream SATA drivers into a custom XP install disk).
3- Set Boot order to DVD drive before hard drives.
4- Put in the install disk and begin, choose Custom and Format BUT make sure you know which drive you are installing it on (go by drive capacities - size - and/or drive brands to make sure you are correct), Format and install.
4a- Install all drivers for XP including SATA drivers for motherboard, then reset BIOS to use SATA properly.
NOTE: Each operating system will consider the drive it is installed on as C Drive. You may want to label each drive to help keep this straight.
5- Put in the Windows 7 repair disk and do a start up repair to create the dual boot (Windows 7 will not be able to start until you do this).
NOTE: Don't forget you will need separate antivirus protection for the XP installation even if you generally do not plan on using it on the internet.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
