You can contact Microsoft and for a fee they can upgrade you to Ultimate. Or you might be better off buying a lesser version of Windows 7. Ultimate is probably overkill.

You didn't realize this was not legal to do?

Read your manual to learn how to re-install starter. If your portable came with starter then you most likely have a netbook which has no CD drive.

Windows starter is usually installed on low spec laptops & netbooks. Are you asking about a Compaq Presario CQ57-339WM? According to the link below, it comes with Win7 Home Premium. Did you buy this laptop new or used?

We generally don't offer help with illegal Windows installations. Do you have the original Windows disc that came with the laptop? If none was provided, did you create the recovery disc set before "upgrading" to Win7 Ultimate?

Your online manual will show you how to do a factory restore from your recovery partition. You will, however loose everything you saved and installed since it was new so save all of your personal files to an external drive and gather all of your program installers to reinstall everything else you want back on it.

Maybe in the future you just might realize that an upgrade from Starter or Home Premium to Pro or Ultimate (or anything else similar) is not going to be free or cheap. And remember that Big Brother Microsoft is always watching. If it is not immediately, it will be at some future update that they will catch up with you. If you want free then you are going to have to go with Linux and opensource programs (openoffice, etc.), if you want to remain mainstream, you will need to pay for it (Apple may be even worse than MS since you can only purchase everything from them).

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

They may be willing to, but since it is something you did that is outside of normal use and something you did (rather something that happened), they may not cover it but either charge you or use it to void your warranty (at least as far as software is concerned).

They would have to take it back to a Factory Restore and wipe the drive in order to return it to the original OS so you would have to back up your files first anyway. You may want to do the Factory Restore yourself since it is typically just a matter of tapping a combination of keys at start up and choosing that option from the menu, then waiting for it to complete. This information should be in your online manual or you can Google your make and model number plus try the words "Factory Restore Key" or "Recovery Console Access".

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
