Might be a dumb question, but do you have those programs installed?

That's why. You need to have Excel and Microsoft Word installed to view those file extensions. They are included in MS Office.

If you need the power of MS Office or some of the programs it comes with but are not willing to spend money on what had in the past been included with windows installations, you can download openoffice.org for free. It is a full office suite, it can open MS office files as well as many others, it can also save files in MS office (and other) formats and even export as PDF files.
At work we receive updates on our factory's inventory as an Excel file (.xls) but recently (after their hours) we discovered that the last one was in a different format (.xlsx) which is either an error or a newer excel format that we could not open with our Office '97....I installed openoffice.org, It opened it and I resaved it as Office '97... problem solved.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
