Change the bios to boot from the CD 1st.

Reboot with the W7 CD in the drive, delete ALL partitions & format to NTFS.

FIRST run the Windows 7 compatibility test from the Windows 7 site. This will tell you if you will experience problems installing Windows 7 on that machine. Some minor things you may be able to work around, like possibly purchasing an inexpensive video card, sound card, or other component if drivers are not available for those. THEN add more memory, 1GB may be listed as the minimum for Windows 7 32 bit, but it really needs 2GB or more to run right and 3GB or more for 64bit.
A better choice would be to do a clean install of your XP and be very selective on what you install on it, especially with your antivirus program since these can slow your system down (stay away from Norton and McAfee especially). On your system you will find that Windows 7 will be slower than a clean install of XP since W7 requires and uses more system resources. On newer hardware Windows 7 beats XP hands down, but it was never designed to run well on less resources that an older system has. Wait for Windows 7 until you upgrade to a newer system and you will be happier.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Yeah, that computer is way too old. Do you even have a DVD drive? Or just a CD drive? Because I don't think you will have any luck trying to boot a DVD in a CD drive.
