Hi sineadxx,

Let us know the system model.

Unplug all external peripherals.

Meanwhile, unplug the adapter and the battery. Press and hold power button for 20 seconds. Plugin the adapter and turn on the system.

Tap F8 for advance boot options. Select Safe Mode and hit enter.

Let us know if the system boots to safe mode.

Thanks & Regards

This implies the hard drive is going out; how much data on this netbook do you want to keep?

Also, fixing this error will require either a Microsoft recovery/Windows CD, or Asus' recovery CD. Do you have either? Asus' will delete everything on the netbook and put it in the same state as when it came out of the factory. Microsoft's will allow you to repair the boot record, or make a recovery disk in the format your netbook can use

Do you have, or have access to, a Microsoft Windows 7 install DVD? If so, you can follow the advice in jpag3074's post about transforming a USB drive into a Windows 7 install USB drive. If your Asus recovery disks are on CD, you'll need an external CD reader, and try to boot off of that.

You can try the above suggestions but my experience with netbooks and Windows 7 starter is that you can ONLY use an external CD/DVD drive and the restore disks. The restore set can only be created on optical disk connected to the netbook. This is why netbooks have fallen by the wayside.
