Solved Hyperlinks no longer work

October 13, 2012 at 19:17:14
Specs: Windows 7
I have linked cells in an Excel Starter spreadsheet to a folder containing more information on subjects. All links worked well until a few days ago when up popped error message...
"This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions on this computer. Contact your system administrator"

I have not changed any file or folder names.

What can I do

Where is the linked folder located? Is it on a network drive?

If so, could the permissions on the network drive have changed?

Thank you for caring

No network involved

Both folders on relatively new, uncluttered C drive.

Source file is Excel list of musicians. Linked folder contains shortcuts to their web pages. The underlined, blue, hyperlink, given name still rermains but as of a couple of days ago the link refused to operate.

I found this via a Google search of your error message.

There were lots of other hits. You might want to try reading the information found at some of those sites.

I seriously doubt that the problem is based within MS Office or Excel. It appears to be an OS or maybe an IE related issue.

As Moderator of this forum, I can move this thread to the Windows 7 forum if you would like.

Thank you

I have had a brief look at that slipstick page and note that reference was made to uninstalling Google Chrome which I had done a few days ago having installed it by mistake. Had not seen the connection with current problem and will address the solution later.

Feel free to move to another thread if you feel something to be gained. Should the solution not work or I am unable to cope with the keystrokes required I shall just have to open the windows side by side and open both files as and when required.

It worked

Lesson learned: Do not download Google Chrome or any other seemingly necessary updates or changes to your operating system or browser until all the consequences have been looked at.
