HP V40 scanning problem on Windows 7

Specs: 7 Ultimate, Enough
Hi all, I'm trying to help my Mom scan her recipies into her laptop. Here are the specs of stuff I'm working with:
laptop is 7 Ultimate
printer is an old HP Officejet V40. I did get it to print some time ago, and she remembered us getting a scan to work once, but I have no idea how, and I can't remember.

Anyone else have this setup? a v40 on 7?

I am pretty sure there is no specific v40 software for Windows 7, or at least I haven't found any yet.

TIA,
Chuck
