I would say from that description that the power supply has failed. If it's under warranty, contact HP. If not it's time to buy a new power supply.

Thank you very much for responding. This is very helpful. I will continue to diagnose while I go after the power supply as a problem. Would this explain the earlier symptoms of the monitor going to sleep?

press the power button for about 10 secs, till fully closed down.
pull the battery and the power cable wait a minute then reboot with just the power supply, if all works well put in the battery.
the sleep message may have been a key combo,

i hate computers!
but cant help myself....

Thanks again. I've since taken the cover off and pressed the power button. All the fans move for a fraction of a second then stop. The LED light on the back stays solid green. Am I able to diagnose if it's something other than the power supply? Or will that take special equipment. This is all very frustrating since the computer is only 13 1/2 months old, (just past warranty). I'm quickly starting to hate HP. I really appreciate any suggestions.
