Windows XP drivers will not work on Windows 7 !!!

Your ScanJet 4300c is not supported on Windows 7 because HP have no Windows 7 driver for it (I just checked their website).

You will have to buy a new scanner, or if you want to use your 4300c scanner on Windows 7 you will have to buy software called "Vuescan" from here:

Vuescan installs a "generic" driver which works with most USB scanners. You can install the trial version to make sure it works with your scanner before buying it.

There are some options that may help get the scanner working.

Go to Start> Control panel. Try using the Hardware and/or Program options. Follow the prompts. The hardware troubleshooter MAY be able to configure the scanner using the default Windows 7 format. This would provide scanner function but may not allow you to use the software that came with the scanner.

If you have the Professional or Ultimate versions of Windows 7 you can download a copy of WinXP that can be run in a Virtual Mode, which may allow you to use the scanner.

Your HP scanner MAY be a re-brand. If you can determine the origin of the scanner, you may be able to find a Windows 7 driver.

Drivers for your model scanner at the HP site go all the way back to Win95. That means that scanner may be as old as 17 years. That is long in the tooth.

There is something to be said for upgrading very old hardware. Your scanner is a flatbed only model that is no doubt slow and poor resolution. There are many choices today. AIW machines, combination flatbed/ sheet fed scanners. And scanners with nice packages of older generation productivity software that is bundled for free.
