The nvidia chip has failed due to overheating. You will have to have the motherboard repaired or replaced. If you fix it, it will happen again. I recommend that you replace the computer.

Very well known issue

Generally HP make some decent products....the DV series isn't one of them. As Gretti states, they are a fatally flawed unit. Some folks seemed to be ok, but many were not, particularly the ones using the AMD 64X2 cpu. You can test the power adapter to make sure it is ok, but I suspect you'll find it board related and costly. In some laptops it's worth repairing.....but not those models. The GPU for the video is right beside the cpu and other heat producing components which caused them to burn out. I have one in my attic, a client brought it to me for repair....I said, save yourself some grief and buy something different. Not great news, but a solution. PS avoid anything toting a 320g hard disk.......not much luck with those either.

Thanks to both Gretti and HopperRox:
I felt that it was a motherboard problem, But I needed the reassurance that both of you gave. I thank you both so very much.
