Solved HP laptop hangs on Windows 7 startup

Microsoft Windows 7 home premium with se...
September 12, 2012 at 13:58:08
Specs: Windows 7 64 bit sp1, AMD Athlon !! 320 dual-core 2.10GHz
My HP laptop is hanging on start up. It always wants to start the start up tool. If I chose that, it takes about 45 minutes to complete. Sometimes it asks to use system restore, but I always get an error and failure. The 2 different errors are "system Restore error ox1F" and "system files integrity error 0x490". If I choose to skip the recovery tool, it takes anywhere from 15-20 minutes to start Windows, and then when it's started, everything runs fine.

Any ideas?

"However, the last time I scheduled a scan at start up, it froze in step 4 I think it was"

It may be best when you have time then, to do it that way again.

Some stages do take a long time. Run it prior to going to bed.

I don't know if this helps, but before this happened, I was getting pictures off of my camera, unplugged the camera (I did the safely eject thing) and then just closed the top, which usually puts the system into sleep mode. After that is when the problem started.

ok, I will try letting it go through the startup repair. It will probably take a while, since I know that the few times I let it go through it before it took a while. I guess it does not make a difference that when startup repair starts on my system, it is by itself, not with the win7 disk? I do not have a copy of it. When I had my system formatted, the comp guy formatted and removed all partitions, including my recovery partition. I did not get a copy of the win7 disk then. I plan to purchase the recovery disks from HP but am really broke right now.

If any program won't run, let me know. Post the log/logs after each run.

After each fix or change we make, let me know how the comp is running. Example: Still cannot boot normally into Normal mode.

2: I think it is a Norton driver causing the problem. Don't install any Antivirus, I shall instruct, after we finish this segment.
Use Revo to Uninstall Norton by double clicking on Norton.
Open Revo, double click on a program logo, click > Yes & then you get your options, with Advanced down the bottom.
If you have partially uninstalled your program, you get a message from Revo, that it can't find the uninstaller, hit Cancel & let Revo continue on, to search for the remnants.
If you get a reboot message, ignore it & do it after Revo has finished.
I use Advanced Mode. Screenshots of how to use.

Why Would I Ever Need an Online Virus Scanner?
I already have an antivirus program installed, isn't that enough?
http://www.squidoo.com/the-best-fre...
Once onto a machine, malware can disable antivirus programs, prevent antimalware programs from downloading updates, or prevent a user from running antivirus scans or installing new antivirus software or malware removal tools. At this point even though you are aware the computer is infected, removal is very difficult.
How can I view the log file from ESET Online Scanner?

The ESET Online Scanner saves a log file after running, which can be examined or sent in to ESET for further analysis. The path to the log file is "C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt". I did look ahead at your other posts, and you mentioned that the Atheros driver is what seems to be a culprit...strange, I have had problems with it since i got this computer. It disables itself in the device manager all the time, started before the format and has happened once or twice since.

If you decide to format, let me know, you have issues that a format will not fix.

o Wait while it scans.
o If your firewall alerts you of Security Check, please press 'Allow' or similar.
* A Notepad document should open automatically after scan is completed. It will be called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

I am at work and do not have my computer with me, but I thought I would let you know that yes, the new driver installed and works fine. I will try to get back on tonite and go through the other steps. I have class tonite, a test (yippee) and then I should be home. Depending on how long it takes me to get my test finished and also on how the weather acts (we are getting torrential downpours today, windy and tornado watches. fun fun!) I will do my best. I have another test tomorrow that I might put off until Friday, depends.

But yea, the driver installed and seems to be working fine. After installing it, I rebooted and it went to the start up repair again, I let it go through and it said that it couldn't fix the issues. I didn't get the log file cause I had to go to work, so :(

Anyway, thanks so much, sorry to be such a pain, or happy to give you something to wrack your brain over LOL Have a good night

Ask at work / neighbors / friends / family / class ( good luck with the test ) if they have an W7 CD.
If they do, you can make a copy & use it with your product number. Ideally it would include SP1.

The reason I ran > The Trojan.Zeroaccess Removal Tool
Disk Management still shows the 100mb in System Reserved, it probably had another drive connected during install, maybe an external one. Another possible is when "the comp guy formatted and removed all partitions, including my recovery partition" he put the recovery partition back.
Todays rootkits are capable of creating & hiding the contents of their own partition. The Trojan.Zeroaccess Removal Tool is capable of identifying & removing an infected partition, I am now satisfied, nothing harmfull is lurking.
If we do a clean reinstall of W7, that partition will go.

I think we are at the point of making a W7 CD with SP1 included, at least we can then run some windows repairs & there are 3 choices, 2 you don't lose anything & the other you lose your updates & installed programs.

If the repair dos'nt fix the problems, then it's a clean install, where you install updates & your programs.

If we do reinstall, let me know, there are some important steps for your comp.

Make sure you have your emails & address book backed up.

Things have improved since I last checked, you can now download a bootable ISO image of W7 with SP1 included.

Is it still under warranty?
Your hard drive is on the way out, you can wait until it fails, which will probably suit you, as long as you backup every 5 mins.

Make sure when that time comes, you compare prices of HD's against buying a new basic laptop, not a lot of difference between the two, over here.

Found a command to run SFC without a W7 CD & do an W7 repair, whilst it is running.
You can access the command prompt by Start > Search, type in cmd & hit > Enter. Or, type cmd in the Run dialog & hit > Enter.
Copy & Paste into the Command Prompt > sfc /scannow /offbootdir=C:\ /offwindir=C:\windows & hit > Enter.

No one can tell you that, if you do a weekly check to see if the 712 figure has grown slightly, if it has jumped quickly to a much higher number, you don't have long, you may hear noises or, it may just fail without warning.

"I just have to get it formatted and all"
Yep, most important you remove all partitions & format to NTFS.

W7 - Click on > Drive options (advanced) Then highlight each partition & hit > Delete.

is there anything in particular that might cause it to go quicker?

I might work on that drive tomorrow, depending on how much school work I get finished before my daughter's soccer game.

"is there anything in particular that might cause it to go quicker?"
Don't understand.

Most important next job, is to download W7, then once you have it on a DVD, you can delete partitions & format from that CD.
I shall walk you through it later with more instructions.

Been meaning to say this for a while, but having so much to remember & trying to stay on track, never got around to it.
You made it much easier for me with your computer savviness.

i mean is there anything that might make it fail quicker...anything i can do to try to prolong the inevitable?

:) thanks, I used to work on computers years ago, worked at an internet company as tech support too. I enjoy working on computers. My friends at work always bring me their systems to look at and fix. lol hasn't been anything too hard yet, other than this, and really it was an easy fix (although the drive is bad, the problem has gone away for now).

You were a great help with all the different programs and sites for help too :)

"with all the different programs"
Assuming you will use the lappy to download W7, once you have done that, here is another program.

It may "prolong the inevitable?"

Here is a tutorial for installing W7 on the spare HDD.

Do not have any other drives ( USB storage for example ) connected during the install.

Ok, well, all is not so well anymore. I am having a lot of problems with the computer, and ugh is all I can say. I can get it to start to safe mode every time, but to try to start it regularly works about 1/4 the time. It lags, freezes, you name it, it does it. Last night it worked fine, so I brought it to work today to try to get the Win7 dvd made, but of course it will only start in safe mode, so no luck there.

I scheduled another scan for startup, last night it went thru start up repair and it repaired something, and then thru scandisk and it worked fine. Not so much this morning. I need to get this DVD made!

Break is over, time flies when you aren't getting anywhere with what you are working on!

Ha :) Got the DVD made! I started my computer and let it "start" for about 20 minutes, and finally it started working enough to make the DVD. I am going to check the disk in another computer, just to make sure it burned correctly, then I am going to get the other drive installed and get to work. All after I make sure I have updated my backups from this computer.

For the install on the other drive, I just put the disk in and install it from the start or should I format the disk BEFORE I start the Win 7 install? It currently has Vista installed on it.

And for the partitioning program on the bad drive, does it totally reinstall programs (including Win7) in order to partition? I am assuming it does, but I want to make sure I know exactly what I am getting into before I get started :)

Thanks so much :) Still have a long road, but I think I am getting there.

OMG don't judge me!

"I just put the disk in and install it from the start"
No.

1: Boot into the bios & change the boot to > Boot from the CD first ( your bios may be slightly different )

2: Put your W7 CD in.

3: Press F10 to save your bios change ( your bios may be different ) & press > OK.

4: Watch the screen for > Press any key ( you only have a few seconds. NOTE: this is the only time you do that during the install, every reboot you will see it again )
Use the Previous image & Next image button in the SS ( below the SS ) on the link in my #95 post to see all the install steps.

5: When the install is finished, remember to go back to the bios & change it back to booting from your HDD first.

"And for the partitioning program on the bad drive"
Let's leave that for now, I'm not sure whether you are talking about the special program I mentioned or using the W7 CD.

Alrighty, so replacement hdd is in the computer and the damn thing won't boot from the cd/dvd drive. I checked in BIOS and that drive is set to boot first. I tried it in my older desktop (which I am on now) and HA I am currently trying to install the drivers for the cd/dvd drive there.

You said it, Murphy's Law!!

Maybe I burnt the DVD wrong, that it is not bootable. Did I do something wrong there? :( Currently, just so that I have something, I have the replacement hard drive going through the HP system recovery, and it is formatting and reinstalling Vista. I couldn't get that hd to even start up normally, so I guess if this doesn't work who knows. ugh. Only my luck!

I think I officially give up. The replacement drive recovery finished ok, and when I clicked on restart, as soon as the Vista loading screen popped up, the computer restarted again. I think I am just going to give up, I don't have the money for a new computer nor do I have the money to get this POS fixed.

I guess I need to find out how I burnt that dvd wrong that it won't boot to it, but I guess that is my last and only option.

OMG don't judge me!

My head is spinning with the info above, I'm trying to break it down to small steps.

"I checked in BIOS and that drive is set to boot first"
Gotta really make sure, you do mean the cd/dvd drive.

Photos of that area in your bios, will help.

The comp will work.

1: If the bios is set correctly, the CD will boot & you have a few seconds to > Press any key.

2: If you don't see that message, your exe is not burnt properly.

////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

The downloaded W7 exe, right click on it > Properties, copy & paste the details as per my SS ( sample only )
