HP laptop Drivers won't install in Win 7

October 21, 2011 at 08:16:08
Specs: Windows 7, Dual Core 2.9ghz/ 3GB
Hello everyone,

I am having issues with my audio drivers and USB drivers. For some reason, after I install the correct drivers, it will work for maybe 5 minutes and then give me the same error message. I have done tons of research and the best answer that came up was to do a power cycle which entails me pulling out the battery while the computer is running and leaving it out for a few minutes. This will fix the problem for about 15 minutes before it all goes wrong again. The same message will pop up explaining that the hardware is not installed. I tried reformatting the computer since that usually fixes most severe problems but that just led to a blank computer with more driver problems. I also downgraded from WIndows 7 to Windows XP and had the same issues so I upgraded back to WIndows 7 again. This is my laptop and it is a HP DV3-2155mx. I am sure the drivers I am installing are correct since I am getting them from the HP website. Not quite sure what else I can do. ALso, for some reason, my fan has been quite loud recently too. I am not sure if it has any bearing on my current issue but if that can be fixed too, well that would be just swell. Thanks for your time.

yeah, i could use help.

When I upgraded back to windows 7, the audio driver is non-existent and the computer says "no audio output device is installed". In device manager, I don't even see an audio category, just an unknown hardware. When I try to install the driver, the installation fails and says that it is nit compatible. Non sense!

You are probably not installing the correct drivers. HP doesn't have any drivers listed for your laptop for WinXP. The correct drivers for Vista or Windows 7 can be downloaded from the link below. Select your version of Windows from the dropdown list and click on Next to get to the download screen. I suggest you get ALL the drivers listed there.

I'm sorry. I was a bit unclear. In windows 7, I keep getting an error message about the USB not being recognized and then it disappears and reappears after some time. Also the audio driver is giving me the issues explained above. Sorry for the confusion.

yeah, i could use help.

Start with a clean install from OEM sources. Does it work? If so then apply all service packs and security suite. Does it work? Leave it alone then.

Just install ALL the drivers for Windows 7. If THAT doesn't solve the problem, then backup your personal files and perform a factory restore.

Then install Microsoft Security Essentials from the link below.

Then update the drivers from the link above.

Reboot and then update windows.

If you are getting a message like that then the USB port is working.

What is the device? Windows may not have a driver for it. The sound should not be USB unless you have some external sound device.

If the laptop fan is noisy you may have dirt/dust inside the laptop and that is causing overheating. That can mess up everything. You need to read the manual to find out how to clean the laptop out. You can try using canned air to blow it out through the vents on the bottom. May or may not be all that is required.

I don't know what I'll do if all it is is dust. The sound and USB are completely separate. The computer will give me an error regarding the USB and then it'll go away and the USB will work again until it fails again a little later. It doesn't give me any details regarding the USB. It just tells me that it is a USB controller. As for the sound, that doesn't work at all.

yeah, i could use help.

It says "USB composite device" in the device manager. Sometimes it will say USB controller. I haven't plugged anything in for it to say this though. It says it on it's own with the computer being without anything connected to it.

I suggest you monitor the system temperatures using HWMonitor from the link below. You can see the temps in the tray while the computer is in use.

http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmo...

Post your temperatures after you use HWMonitor.

You can capture most anything on a web page by highlighting it and copying the highlighted section.

Your laptop does not appear to be overheating. I am guessing you have the wrong drivers installed.

I have a Microsoft keyboard that I have had for years. When I first went to WinXP I had the same issue you describe. The problem was an incompatible driver. Once I got the correct driver installed the problem went away.

I guess your problem could be something wrong with the hardware too.

I will suggest once more that you install ALL the drivers located at the HP site I linked above in #2.
