HP Deskjet 3915 won't install in Windows 7

Specs: Windows 7
My mother has an HP Deskjet 3915 printer that she can't install on her new computer. I know her operating system is Windows 7 64-bit, but I neglected to ask her what model computer she has if that's important. She has followed the directions she was given as far as hooking up the USB and powering on the computer, but apparently nothing happens. I thought maybe we could download the driver and install it manually, but I can't get the driver - I get the message that the driver is already installed. According to Microsoft's website the printer is compatible, so I'm confused.

While I'm fairly good with working on the computer, she's not at all comfortable with it. As she lives in the States and I live overseas in Japan, I can't go over and help her out, but if I give her detailed directions she can follow them. Unfortunately, in this case I don't know what to look at next. Help please?

Have you tried having her uninstall the driver? Hp is good for stuff like that.
