Any software which is set to update automatically in the background could be the reason (eg Adobe Reader, Java, Flash etc). Check the settings in all of them.

✔ Best Answer
u r using windows 7,so
start task manager.in the performance tab click resource monitor.
in resource monitor click on the network tab and you will see all the processes that are using the internet
.disable the unwanted ones that are using the net(only if you are sure)

or if u have any doubts if the processes are important then post them here.
its not good to disable the antivirus(if you have on) because it keeps your pc safe.and svchost, thats a windows process

You can also disable programs that start with Windows (including most updaters) by running msconfig and going to the Start tab and unchecking all except Microsoft and your antivirus (the main one), Apply and restart the machine. If you are not sure of anything, copy the info down and Google the info. Anything you uncheck can be launched manually anyway, just not start with Windows and you can always go back in to recheck any of them.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

It would help us if you could list the programs. Don't they give any indication at all?
Could be a virus.

If it is Java for instance you can stop updates from the Java icon in the Control Panel.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
