My computer crashed so I reinstalled windows 7 update and it deleted all my old files. It was like starting a new computer. no previous files, folders, settings, or programs
you obviously did a factory restore and NOT a windows 7 update. Some HELP in posting on Computing.net plus free progs and instructions Cheers
... so any file recovery is not possible!
YES, you can still recover lots of your files...DON'T add any progs or anything until after you have recovered your files as that will erase any chance of recovering.
Try Recuva:

To clarify #3 above. If the same portion of the hard drive has not been overwritten then the old files will still be there but don't show. Recuva can see and recover them in most cases. You may want to read and set what type of files you want to recover. Otherwise the available list may be unmanageable.

Try recuva on your exiting Windows installation. You will be amazed at how many files you thought were deleted can still be recovered. No need to actually recover them.
