How to rearrange icons in Win 7 Quick Launch

I have a rectangular LCD display, so I have moved my toolbars from the bottom of the screen to the left side to give me more vertical display space. When I try to arrange the order of the icons in my Quick Launch Toolbar, sometimes I can get one or two icons where I want them via left- or right-click & drag, but usually either nothing at all happens or the icon ends up in a completely random location. I've searched this and other forums without success in finding a discussion of this problem, so I hope that someone here may be able to help.

Have you tried moving the Taskbar back to the bottom of the screen, rearranging the icons and then moving it to the left side?

Yes, just now. And--Oh Happy Day!--it worked! Your solution also survived a reboot--a critical necessity. I did lock the taskbar while it was still at the bottom of the screen before moving it back to the left side and rebooting. Thus I don't really know if the rearrangement would have survived a reboot without the lock, but I see no reason not to lock it anyway. (BTW, this demonstrates a bit of additional trivia--apparently locking the taskbar does not prevent it's being moved about. Interesting.)

Thank you very much for your reply--maybe something I should have been able to think of on my own, but so often it seems that we can't see the forest for the trees.

What a great intro this has been for me to these forums. A piece of accurate and workable advice within 24 hours of posting my question--outstanding! Thanks again, BurrWalnut!

I'm having a similar problem but I'm able to move my icons in the desired sequence and everything but notepad sticks where I want it to be.

I like it in the order of IE, Outlook, Notepad, paint, word, excel, ... rest doesn't matter.

However, after setting this order up, at some point and time, notepad always winds up back at the very end of all the icons.

It's very small cosmetically but I'd like to know why this is happening, if anyone else has seen this, and if there is a table or folder where the sequence is stored so that I can manually set them.
