If your system is as it came from the factory, then C drive takes up nearly all of the hard drive and there is no additional space to expand it to. If you have a desktop computer, simply add a second hard drive ($40.-$60.) and format it (it will be assigned a new drive letter), then move most of your personal files from the old hard drive to the new one, in fact you can actually Cut/Paste your Documents and other folders to the new drive and add back shortcuts to the original location so they will be easy for you to find. When you have moved all of these files over, then do a disk clean up and a disk defragmentation on your C drive to get it working 'perky' again.
If this is a laptop computer, get an external hard drive and move off of the C drive files you do not immediately need to make extra room (you should maintain at least 15% free space for Windows and your programs to run well), then do a disk clean up and defrag as above so your programs can work better.
Another way to squeeze a little bit more room on a tight drive is to reduce the allowed space System Restore can use from 12% or 15% to maybe 8% or 10%, this will just reduce the number of restore points your system can store.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
