With Windows Explorer, open the desktop. In Tools (press alt), folder options, view, there's a hidden file and folders option, click on the show hidden files and folders.

Then you can delete hidden file you have in the desktop.

Thank you very much for your reply. I have Windows7. There is no folder options under Tools in Explorer. Found folder options by searching programe and files in the start menu and clicked "show hidden folders files and drives" but could change nothing other than filling its radio button. Icons which I want to delete are in the taskbar (on the bottom right) in hidden icons.
Thanks for your help.

chaudblaze gave you incorrect advice.
"Hidden files and folders" has nothing to do with the bottom taskbar. You should restore you previous settings.

The correct name for what you are talking about is the "Notifications Area". The icons might be set to hidden or shown (see Start button > Properties) but it makes no difference to what you need to do.

All of them are running programs. Sometimes within certain programs there is an option to not show a tray icon if you just want them out of the way.

You can stop the programs starting up with Windows by typing msconfig in the Run box then unticking them in the Startup tab - there will then be no tray icon. There might be a downside to doing so but this depends on what particular programs you mean.

Alternatively if you are certain you don't need the programs they can be uninstalled. If there is no Uninstall in "All Programs" then they can be uninstalled by going to Control Panel > Programs and Features. Make sure you fully understand what you are uninstalling because there may be no easy way to get them installed again.

Please come back and let us know the outcome.

Thank you for your advice. You are correct it is the "Notification area". The icons which I wish to wipe out concern programmes already deleted but persisting as hidden icons. For example uninstalled Paretologic or Mind Movies Subliminals which on clicking open into a full site despite removal from programmes. It may be ok not to bother with these but it simply annoys that so many installed things bring uninvited add-ons and resist deleting.

Well, I suppose some might appear in msconfig > startup but unticking them there is still only a way to "hide" the issue. It could be worth checking in Program Files to see what has been left behind for each program. The real answer is probably in the registry, but great care has to be taken in there to ensure that no babies float away with the bathwater.

Although I have never used it personally, many folk on this forum recommend Revo Uninstaller (which apparently gets shot of dregs). There is a free version but I've not checked its limitations - It might be worth a go just the same.

Please come back and let us know the outcome.
