Your actual program icons are in the AVG folder in the Programs folder on your hard drive EXACTLY where they belong. Clicking on the shortcut will open the program so it is just what you want on your desktop, not the actual program icon. If the shortcut is accidentally deleted, you just find the actual icon, right click on it and 'send shortcut to desktop', but if you delete the actual program icon you will need to reinstall the program to set it right. There are also many other files that must be in the same folder as the program icon so the program can find all of its components when you launch it. Another reason to use shortcuts on your desktop and not worry that they are "not the real icon". You CAN if you like rename the icon and eliminate the word "shortcut" if it is present and it would clean things up and make them 'feel' like they are the 'originals'. Remember, in almost all ways, the shortcut will work just like the actual program icon, it is just safer to use the shortcut on a daily basis.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
