how to format winxp laptop to win 7 with external dvd drive

im using laptop HP pavilion DV1000 , dvd drive is failed, so i have a external usb dvd drive , now i have to install win 7 please explain . . .

You need to change the BIOS settings to look for an external USB drive (CD/DVD/flash) first in the boot sequence. On that old of a machine it may or may not be possible. Otherwise you'll have to replace the internal drive.

You'll never run Win7 on a laptop with just 512MB RAM.

If there's any way possible to expand the RAM in the machine to 2GB, do so before attempting to install Win7 (under any circumstances). Otherwise, stick with Win2K/XP
