Connect your printer to your computer.
Wait until you get on the Internet to turn your printer on.
(It may start a search on it's own)
If it doesn't start a search.
Go to the Control Panel - Devices and Printers -
Right click the printer Icon that needs a driver and left click Trouble Shooter. Click on Apply this fix.
Once the search has started do nothing until the driver is Installed.
If you have dial-up it may take several tries.
This worked for my HP 3 in 1 printer, copier and
scanner.
This also worked on my 2 Canon printers.
This will only install the basics.

Read the instructions, that is what they are for.
Most scanners require installing their driver and software before you plug in the scanner. If you have plugged it in, then go to device manager and uninstall it there, then follow the steps as outlined. If you do not have the origninal paperwork, try downloading from their website.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

In addition to the above you may have a scanner that is not compatible with Windows 7. Ascertain the make and model of the scanner and go to the manufactures website. Look for Windows 7 software for this particular scanner. If you do not find the software I would say that you are out of luck. You need the scanner software before beginning installation.
