This older post here at CN may apply. It refers to Vista but likely is the same for Win-7.

http://www.computing.net/answers/wi...

Be very aware that a factory restore/reset will erase "all" your personal files in the process. So if there is anything on the hard drive you'd like to [reserve... then first copy them to external storage. Typically this is CD/DVD but an external hard drive too is nice(r). Do NOT use flash drives/usb memory sticks for this.

Also - why the decision to go for a factory Restore routine?? Perhaps post more details etc. re' why this decision as possibly it may not be necessary to go such a drastic step?

Regardless though - safeguard/copy your personal files etc to external storage. And develop the habit of doing this regularly too. That way in event of any problems with your Vaio OS etc. your files will be safe elsewhere.

When you have made copies - check they are accessible on at least one other working system if possible; and certainly on your Vaio too.

Also - when you have a working installation (again) - make a set of Recovery Disks for it (to DVD). This is usually advised by manufacturers for each laptop; but sadly frequently ignored...

✔ Best Answer
From the support documents for your model:

On models with the ASSIST button:

1. Press the ASSIST button while your computer is off to launch VAIO Care Rescue.
2. Click Start recovery wizard. To perform the custom recovery, select Tools and click Start advanced recovery wizard.
3. Follow the on-screen instructions.

On models without the ASSIST button:

1. Turn on your computer and press the F10 key several times before the VAIO logo screen disappears. If the Edit Boot Options window is displayed, press the Enter key.
2. Select Start recovery wizard. To perform the custom recovery, select Tools and click Start advanced recovery wizard.
3. Follow the on-screen instructions.

EDIT: your laptop model is also know as PCG71318L

I'm echoing Derek here; clean out the system - fully... Much easier in the long run...

Post back for the usual utilities recommended here; all of which are free, safe to use and do the job.

Regardless - keep the habit of copying all your personal "stuff" regularly to external storage. That way if anything "ever" goes amiss with the installation - your "stuff" is already safe elsewhere.
