Recovery instructions should be in the manual that came with the laptop. If not, you should be able to find that information on their website. Usually it involves rebooting and hitting one of the Function Keys to bring up the appropriate menu.

As to checking it, Start >> right click on 'Computer' >> select Manage

From the Manage Computer window try using the Disk Management utility.

Generally there is no easy way to "check" a recovery partition unless you have some md5 or other means. The only good test is to use the recovery and see if it works.

Once in a while I suspect they fail. Some companies allow you to create extra media such as dvd or buy them. If the partition fails then they may be needed.

Did you create the restore media that you are allowed to and should create? As stated above, if your hard drive fails you will need that media.
