I have a bunch of .rtf files in which I keep various kinds of information. All are indexed for filename and content. My question is how often is the index refreshed -- when new info is added to a file how soon can I expect to be able to find the file I put it in by searching on a word or phrase or number from this new content? Is there a way to increase the frequency of the automatic refreshing? (I know I can manually do an index rebuild at any time.)

index refreshing happens whenever Windows detects a change to any of the indexed content, though it may take a while for new or modified files to be indexed because Windows has to check the entire index.

There is no way I know to alter the frequency of index checking/refreshing other than by rebuilding it manually.

Thanks for your response.

Something disconcerting to report: I put a 6-digit number in one of those .rtf files, and then did a manual index rebuild; a search using the search box below the start menu didn't find the number, even though a search on an older numerical entry found the file.

I tried the above test 2 more times, and each time the file was found. In the 2nd test of the two the number was placed near the bottom of an .rtf file containing over 2000 lines of text.
