I assume the failing drive--ST3500418AS--is internal and the USB mass storage device is non-booting? If so try booting with the USB drive removed. Occasionally they interfere with booting.

Do other error messages come up? How long do you wait for it to do something?

Sometimes a failing drive will occasionally boot up so you may want to keep trying. If it does, don't turn it off and have your copying hardware available.

Otherwise the best thing to do is remove the failing drive and connect it to a working, booting second somputer and transfer files that way. That means putting it in an external USB case or attaching it internally to a available port there.

IF all of the above fail to help you recover your files you may be able to try the following "Freezer Method":
Remove the hard drive and place it in a Ziploc bag, if possible with a small Silica-gel bag to absorb moisture. Place in freezer for 30 minutes. Remove from freezer and bag and immediately connect as a second drive on a working desktop computer and boot it up. If it works copy all of the data as fast as possible before it warms up. If necessary shut down and repeat another 30 minutes cooling down, etc.
You can Google it online if you want to see other tips and risks but if it is not working and you are not going to spend BIG bucks on professional recovery, it may be worth it for you.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
