How do I restore opening a new Word doc using a right click

November 8, 2015 at 08:21:45
Specs: Windows 7
I downloaded Word Perfect to try it, but then removed it from my computer. In the installation I had clicked to associate Word documents with those in Word Perfect. I've removed Word Perfect, but now the icon for my Word documents still looks different and I can't open a new document with a right click. Under "New," a Word Doc is not an option, though a new Word Purblisher doc is there.

What version of Word are you using?

2007 has a Diagnostic feature:

Running Microsoft Office Diagnostics from within Word

Click the Microsoft Office button
Click on the Word Options button to bring up the Word Options dialog box (at the bottom of window)
Click on the Resources button in the left hand pane
Click on the Diagnose button in the right hand pane
Click Continue
Click Run Diagnostics

Otherwise, try a Repair from Control Panel

Go to Control Panel
Open Uninstall a Program
Scroll down to Microsoft Word or Office which ever you have installed.
Select the File, do not double click,
At the top of the menu, click on Change
Click on Repair

Also here is a MS site that offers a FIX-IT that may help:

Search your computer for a file called Winword.exe. If you have hidden file extensions you won't see the exe part. Note where the file is located (look at the path). Go to a doc file then use right click Open With to browse and find the above file. This should sort your issue. If you have issues with other Word files then follow the same procedure with them.

I do have Windows 2007. I was able to do a repair on Microsoft Professional 2010 following your instructions. Thank you. At first I still could not find Microsoft Word as one of the options in the menu when I right clicked and selected New on the desktop. I then followed another responder's instructions for searching for Winword.exe and copied the path I found in the properties menu. Then when I went back to the desktop I found I could open a Word doc by right clicking. A Word doc was now among the selections. I'm not sure exactly what restored it. I expected to have to enter the path to Winword, but didn't. Thank you for your help! I'm happy to have this option back.

Thank you for your help. Here's what I did. I first did a repair on Microsoft Professional 2010. I expected to have to enter the path to Winword that I copied, but that wasn't necessary.. Thank you for your help! I'm very happy to have this option back as I use it all the time..

No, you didn't have to copy the path, just use it to find WinWord.exe and the system does the rest. Don't forget you "might" have to do that for any other document types you use, such as .docx.

Good to hear about your progress and thanks for letting us know.
