You can only guess unless you have specialized equipment and software and even factory line diags don't always work.

1/3 of highway deaths are caused by drunks. The rest are by people who can't drive any better than a drunk.

Unless it is under warranty it does not pay to change the motherboard on a laptop, it will be expensive and difficult. Test the Memory with Memtest86. Test the hard drive with the utility offered by the hard drive manufacturer. Repair or reload Windows and then all drivers new from the factory website.
Post your specific problem for suggestions to solve it. If all else fails, replace it.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

If you have a 4 inch burned blacken hole from a lightning strike, you'd know it is time to replace.

If a M-1 tank ran over it, I'd guess you would have to replace it.

If you left it in a thermonuclear blast say out to 10 or 20 miles, you'd have to replace it.

If you put it in the ocean for a few years, you know.
