How do I fix Win 7 startup problems

January 26, 2011 at 13:14:17
Specs: Windows Vista
Hi,
Whenever I start up my laptop and try to get it running. All it shows is this icon flashing in the top left hand corner, _

I can use ctrl + alt + del and get to the bios and boot menu, but then nothing happens for when I try to boot it from my system recovery disk.

Another question I have is IF I switch from Win 7 to Vista; will that delete all my files from a recovery CD?

The laptop I use is an Alienware M17. The thing is barely a year old.

In reverse order, you do not want to go back to Vista. Forget that.

In bios you have to select the cdrom/dvdrom drive to be the first choice. If that fails then you may need someone to look at it. Could be some issue as to your settings in bios or maybe some hardware problem.

A local friend may help you try to boot to the Windows DVD. Then show you how to use the repair features.

You also may not have a bootable dvd. It may be some data disk.

Also you may have a way to recover at boot with a F key.

Why did it take me over a year to phone in a problem to ATT?

have you tried, f8 to get into safe mode?
try a system restore from safe mode.
if not you can download a recovery cd from here http://neosmart.net/blog/2009/windo... then boot with the cd in the machine, and try repair/ststem restore from the cd.
if that fails your machine will have a hidden partition that can be accessed from boot by tapping an F key, check the manual or alien site for which key, this will wipe the C; drive and reinstall your machine to the day you bought it, so you may want to save your files via a linux boot cd first.

i hate computers!
but cant help myself....
