Unless it's a DVD-RW you can't erase it. A regular DVD can't be erased or overwritten.

Thanks Grasshopper:
My DVD is DVD-R so I assume I cannot erase it.
Thanks for responding.

If you are intending to dump the DVDR - then I'd simply smash it (wrap in paper towel or a piece of cloth) and then hit it with a hammer or something seriously "hard 'n heavy-ish".

Once it's a few pieces... you can dump it.

And "some" shredding machines (usually for paper and possibly credit cards) will also "shred cdd/disks...

Why don't you burn it?

#5 - Are you serious? You will end up with lumps of melted plastic or your lungs filled with noxious fumes. There are other better ways .

Burning a compact disk sufficiently to destroy the data would
be about as quick and easy to do as smashing it. Here, I've
found an old disk. I'll try it.... Three minutes later, it's still hot.
Temporarily had a floppy CD! Now curled over on itself.
Not burnt, but definitely unrecoverable.
