The best thing you can do if the machine is to be used by more than one person is to make additional users, one admin account for maintenance, one normal user for you for daily use, and either one normal user for everyone else, or one normal user for each user. Your personal folders will not be visible to other normal users. Use a different password for each user and if you need to walk away, either log off your user or use a password on a screen saver.
This set up will work for home or a typical office set up. IF you feel you need a higher level of security, you will need to explain what you feel you need and in basic terms, why. If you are on a business network, you will need to discus this with your system administrator. If you want to keep the kids (or parents or spouse) from viewing or deleting work, pics and personal stuff, then this should be plenty.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
