Nothing shows on the screen--not even the gateway logo or posting screen when you first start it up? If that's the case the problem goes beyond just restoring the OS.

Don't forget to preorder your Hatch green chili for this fall. Many vendors ship world-wide.

If nothing ever shows on the screen then it is a hardware fault with no software fix.

Unfortunately there are many possible reasons. If it "sounds" as if it is booting up you could check that the connection between the motherboard and screen are plugged in firmly. Sometimes these cables wear around the hinge area and do not connect properly.

If it sounds completely dead then it could be the charger unit, the power unit or even the CPU or motherboard. If you can't get it to work then the best way to get at your data is to install the HD in an external USB enclosure and try accessing the contents on another computer.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

before doing a factory restore I would suggest that you remove the HD from the problem machine as per response 3 (I didn't see that when I gave my reply) and then slave it to another machine to REMOVE all your files and documents...because once you do the factory restore...ALL will be lost

As per #3, factory restore is not applicable if this statement is correct:
"i have nothing that will come up on my screen whatsoever".
It has to be a hardware fault if it doesn't even show the Gateway splash screen.

Whatever, the laptop will have to be dismantled in order to get the HD out, so there is a vague chance the fault will be unearthed during this process. Maybe something has come adrift.

Hmmmm....my experiences are that HD's are real easy to remove from any laptop...usually 2 or 4 screws holding a plate that you remove...

Jo, that's the best advice we can give based on what you've told us. If it's not powering up at all--no fans or LEDs--it could be a battery or charger problem.

In any case, there's a good chance the hard drive with all your data on it is still good and, as mentioned above, you can remove it and attach it as a second drive in another computer.

I agree with #7.
The point I was making is that the HD has to be "physically removed". Some posters are not comfortable with doing this, however simple it might seem to us helpers.

Jo-EllenC
Before working on the laptop physically, as a minimum ensure that it is disconnected from domestic power and that the main battery is removed. Finally hold the "Power Off/On button" in for about 15 seconds to discharge the motherboard. Failure to do the foregoing might cause something to be zapped.
