What size hard drive do you have ? How many partitions are there on it ? Can you post a picture of Disk Management screenshot ? Start menu -> Right-click Computer -> click Manage... -> click Disk Management on the left pane of the window that opens.

Check it with the disk-cleanup, also defragment it. And top of all scan the HDD for any malwares !!

The amount of HD space gained by defrag would be very little. However, if it runs through without any issues it would give a little more confidence in the integrity of the HD. Can't beat a thorough HD test though.

What is the total capacity of your HDD & how is it partitioned? And how have you determined that there's 140GB "missing"?
