If HP replaced the hard drive how do you expect to retrieve data off a drive when it is no longer present?

If you still have both drives (not sent back yet) you will not typically be able to boot to the new drive and also access the old drive (if it works at all), but you may want to temporarily add it to a desktop that uses SATA drives and as a second drive you may have access to the files to be able to save them and then transfer them over. (I bet the failed drive is a Seagate)
Edit: just saw the latest addition while I was typing and getting a snack, It was a Seagate....Typical (a problem too common for me to be happy about)

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Recovery from the old drive is dependent on what is wrong with it. If it is mechanically broken or the circuit board is fried you would need professional recovery, which can get very expensive.

I suspect that may be the case, but you haven't provided details for us to go on.

That said, your best bet is to connect the drive to a working Windows computer and try to recover files. If the drive spins up and you can access it then you may be able to recover files eithr directly or by using recovery software.

Recuva is one such recovery software. Get recuva at the link below.

To clarify, did you look in My Computer> manage> storage> disk management?

If so, and the drive is not showing there, look in: My computer> manage> device manager. The drive enclosure should show as a USB device and the drive may show as a hard drive.

When other methods fail, SOMETIMES connecting it internally to a desktop machine will give you access when external USB cases do not. If that does not work, you may not be able to get the files unless you are willing to pay quite a bit of money.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

My WD HD 500GB passport is not showing up in "my computer" but it is showing up under "device manager" and under "disk management" but when i click on "initialize" it says "media is file protected" which blocks me from initializing it. When i plug the hard drive to the usb port it spins normally and no sound or clicking, but the only problem is it wouldnt show up in "my computer". Please help me asap as i rely very much on the files that are stored in the hard drive. I may not find this site again as i cant save it so please email me to :mahdi19511951@hotmail.com. Ty :)
