Specs: Windows 7
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: <windows root>\system32\hal.dll. Please reinstall a copy of the above file. How do I troubleshoot this issue?

This hidden file is used by Windows XP to communicate with your computer's hardware. Maybe you accidentally deleted this file or become damaged, corrupted for several reasons.

I think this will solve your problem. http://www.techyv.com/questions/win...

You might have caused a little confusion because you posted on the XP forum rather than Windows 7. I have tagged this post so maybe the moderator will move it to Win7.

Ooops, maybe I've done the wrong thing. You say you have Windows7 yet seem to be talking about XP. Which is it?

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Hi, Derek:
It's Windows XP program that I'm having the Hal.dll issue...one of the posters gave me a link for Windows7 and I asked him did it relate to Windows XP? Sorry for the confusion.

Peace,

Oh dear, then it's a pity I got it shifted.

Can you get into Safe Mode (tap F8 key while booting)? If so type sfc.exe /scannow
in the Run box and see if that helps.

Otherwise, see how you get on with the links given in #1.

I'm not sure how far the link given in #2 applies to XP (although the file is in the same location). There is an XP Repair Install if you should need it as a last resort:

".I will have someone to use this information to see if it works. PC_issues7"

All that has to be tried is Method 1 & if that dos'nt work go to 2 & if that dos'nt work go to Method 3 & if that dos'nt work go to Method 4.

The other links are guides if you have to use Method 4 ( Recovery Console )
