There are other things to consider other than virus' when it comes to a slow machine. Things i would try and do are

1) Full Virus scan
2) Scan pc with MalwareBytes
3) Scan pc with Spybot Search and Destroy
3) Defragment all drives (do not use the machine while this is defragmenting)
4) perform a Scan Disk;

1.Open the "Computer" window
2.Right-click on the drive in question
3.Select the "Tools" tab
4.In the Error-checking area, click <Check Now>.

5) under MSCONFIG Under the Startup Tab deselect those items that are NOT important when windows loads up.

6) Download/install/run CCleaner - this will free up some unnessacry files from your machine.

I wouldnt use the registry cleaner feature of CCleaner though.

Let us know how this goes.

If it worked well when new then there is only two issues to consider. One is the OS has somehow changed by installation of apps or malware or undetectable malware. Or the machine has some hardware issue.

I'd reload the OS from OEM media and see if it speeds up. You can make a complete backup if you want to return it if not happy. Then diag hardware.

Using as many best practices as you can avoids this generally.

Hang up and live.

It's difficult to help without knowing your system specs. Is it a desktop or a laptop? OEM or custom build? Did it originally come with Win7 installed or was Win7 installed as an upgrade? Do you have a decent processor & at least 4GB RAM?
