format the drive win 7

Specs: Windows XP, 1.5 gig
HI guys my laptop is not starting up so i dicided to load back the windows thats win 7 when I tried to do that it pass the part that says loading windows files after that it came to the part that says setup starting and that it its not going more .is there another way to format the drive i also tried another windows disc to load the same thing.

You need to eliminate hardware issues before you can reinstall the OS. Might want to run memcheck as well as a disk drive checker to make sure your hardware is working correctly. What you describe sounds like its not working correctly.

You can boot the windows 7 cd via the bios to then install which will allow you to format during install.

How did you get Windows 7 on to it the first time?

Could be a driver issue. Some chipset driver needed.

Could it be there you have some hardware issue too? Some bad disk, memory or such. Easy enough to run memory diagnostics on it.

Do you understand what 'format' will do? It will completely erase the HDD & setup a new file system, nothing more. Formatting does NOT reinstall Windows, that is a completely different operation.
