Files disappeared from folders in Windows 7

Specs: Windows 7
My 64bit computer has three hard drives. I use D & E as storage. On drive E I have a folder called Downloads that I store miscellaneous files. One of the folders called Imaging contained all my photography software each in its own folder. This afternoon, I clicked on one of those folders to install the software, but the contents of the folder was missing. It turns out that all the contents of all the folders have disappeared. The folders are there, but there is nothing in any of them. I ran Stellar Phoenix, and it recovered the folder structure, but the folders were empty. What could have happened, and does anyone have any idea how I can recover all my files. I am an administrator on the local computer & network. UAC is turned off. Antivirus is MS Security Essentials. Any thoughts? Thank you.

Just a thought, check the W7 default Download folder.

Nope, not there. I have three hard drives in the computer. D & E are the ones I use for file storage. Thank you for your suggestion though.

Have you found a resolution to this problem?
I have a similar issue with a client's machine. A new i5 with 8 GB, Win 7Pro. Running in an SBS 2003 domain.
Antivirus is Sophos. We initially had a problem wherein all NETBIOS connections to the server would cease to function. TCP was working is so far as you could pint and resove a machine by name. NETBIOS though was not functioning. You could npt net view anything.
I restarted the Workstation service and the three services that depend upon it and things seemed to work again. Desktop Search though did not, it required a reboot to get searching functioning again.
The client will create docs in Word 2007 and save them either to the desktop, a share on the server or to a folder on the desktop. Upon exiting Word and reopening it, the file just disappears with not trace. Can't find anything in Temp, recycle bin, not a shadow of it to see.
